For Maryland Employees

Fortis Employment Law was built for one purpose: To provide Maryland professionals with the elite, transparent representation they need when their careers are on the line.

A Storied History

1964

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII) made it illegal to fire or mistreat employees based on race, sex, religion, or national origin, laying the foundation for modern discrimination and wrongful termination claims that we still litigate every day.

1990

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) required employers to provide reasonable accommodations and banned disability-based termination, forming the backbone of many Maryland retaliation and failure-to-accommodate cases we handle.

2007

Maryland enacted the Fair Employment Practices Act (FEPA), giving Maryland workers state-level protections that often go further than federal law and allowing cases to be brought locally, where juries better understand workplace realities.

2019

The Maryland General Assembly expanded workplace protections through amendments to FEPA and related statutes, increasing damage caps and strengthening employee rights in counties like Montgomery and Prince George’s, changes we actively leverage in litigation strategy.

2022

Maryland’s Time to Care Act and continued expansions of wage, retaliation, and worker-protection laws reflected a shift toward stronger enforcement, reinforcing our focus on holding employers accountable when they assume the law won’t be enforced.
